Karma Taylor

I have a deep appreciation for strong, clean lines, confident forms, and rich colours. By fusing Scandinavian minimalism with a hint of mid-century retro, I aim to create a bold yet effortless aesthetic in my work. I believe that the objects we interact with should enhance our lives beyond their practical function, so I strive to spread happiness by transforming everyday items into refined works of art.

I am originally from Gothenburg on the West Coast of Sweden. After two decades as an art director in the corporate world, I collided with the proverbial wall and emerged burned out and directionless. It was only during an extensive sabbatical, trekking roughly 15,000 km on foot, that I regained my centre nearly a decade later.

All those years in the backcountry fostered a deep healing connection to nature and sparked a desire to express my creativity using natural materials rather than pixels. Clay has proven to be a dynamic and expressive medium, allowing for significant experimentation and growth in my artistic journey.

The flow-on effects of this reboot journey changed the course of my life completely as it introduced me to both Aotearoa New Zealand and my partner, Scott. For years we lived a rather nomadic lifestyle hiking across the world together. But when covid sidelined our expedition we settled in Scott’s native Aotearoa and I am once again a West Coast girl, only this time on the other side of the world.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to live and work in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The dramatic landscape not only nourishes my soul but also serves as a continuous source of inspiration for my creative work. Although my studio is small, it thrives with creativity, nestled within vibrant rainforest and framed by towering limestone cliffs that overlook the Tasman Sea.

All of my work is handmade, either wheel-thrown, hand-built, or a combination of both. I mix my glazes from scratch, and after extensive testing, I have developed a distinctive colour palette that sets my work apart. Numerous meticulous steps must align perfectly to create a successful piece of handmade ceramics. For this reason, I do not believe in shortcuts. I value the artistic process and keep my batches small to ensure quality and authenticity.

Ceramics is both resource- and energy-heavy so I am always looking for ways to reduce the environmental footprint of my business. My primary clay body is made from 100% NZ clay and I am mindful of all the systems and habits I employ to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible. We are on rainwater supply here, and my studio and electric kiln are powered primarily by the solar energy we produce on site.
